Biography
Miran Šabić (Brežice, Slovenia, 1986) is a printmaker and painter who lives and works in Samobor and Zagreb. He attended primary school in Samobor and graduated from the Graphics Department of the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb. At the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb he graduated in 2010 from the Printmaking Department, in the class of Professor Fran Paro, where he also earned his doctorate in 2017 under the mentorship of Professor Ante Rašić and Professor Leonida Kovač. He is known to the public above all as an artist of a pronounced printmaking sensibility, yet for some time he has also worked in painting, carrying his recognisable graphic idiom into a new medium. At the centre of his work lies the relationship between memory, perception and reality. His inclination towards archiving and towards the physical and mental preservation of objects was declared in his doctoral dissertation "Archiving Memory — On the Border of Life and Death", presented in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2017. His painting grows out of that same archival procedure: he paints his scenes not from life, but from memory. Since 2019 he has exhibited continuously in Croatia and abroad. To date he has held 27 solo exhibitions and taken part in 130 group exhibitions, as well as six residency programmes in Croatia, Europe and the USA. He has received 15 awards and honours in Croatia and internationally. He is an Associate Professor at the Printmaking Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.
