Biography

Hari Ivančić (born 26 November 1967 in Pazin) is an Istrian contemporary painter and graphic artist, recognised for his powerful, almost tactile bond with the landscape and the matter of the earth. He completed the School of Applied Arts and Design (graphics department) in Zagreb and in 1994 graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of Prof. Vasilije Jordan. He lives and works in Buzet and is a member of HDLU (Istra, Rijeka, Zagreb) and the Croatian Freelance Artists' Association. His artistic path has been marked by a gradual turn toward a painterly language in which the landscape motif is not described 'from the outside' but built from within – through layers, the rhythm of the surface, and chromatic tensions. Critics have highlighted precisely this vibration of the pictorial plane: shimmering, optically oscillating structures in which the viewer loses any single 'fixed point' and is drawn into the painting as an experience rather than a mere depiction. Ivančić has held numerous solo exhibitions in Croatia and beyond (including Istria, Rijeka, and Zagreb), participated in a series of juried group exhibitions at home and abroad, and has received multiple awards for his work. Of particular note is the comprehensive presentation of his oeuvre through a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Istria and the publication of the extensive art monograph Hari Ivančić: Unravelling Genre, Entangling the Painting (MSUI, 2022).
